Review: Jason Derulo, NIA

Jason Derulo Talked Dirty to Birmingham's NIA. Reviewer Jody Ball went along to the show.

Jason Derulo is lucky to be on stage performing - after a serious accident in rehearsal, he broke his neck during his 2012 tour.

But on stage in Birmingham on Saturday night, he owned the stage at Birmingham's NIA.

Before the headliner took to the stage, support act Conor Maynard warmed up the NIA clad in double denim and kicking off with Animal. He started his career putting out covers on YouTube and went back to his roots by doing a mash-up of Clean Bandit’s Rather Be and Craig David’s Fill Me In. He went on to play his hits Vegas Girl, Can’t Say No which was remixed with Snoop Dogg’s Drop it Like it’s Hot, Turn Around and finishing on Crazy.

And then when the main act took to the stage, the audience was treated to an energetic show which showcased Derulo's dance moves, including his signature handstand and even the splits. It must be said he doesn't like to wear a shirt very much, but frankly, who's complaining.

Fans were treated to hits from his back catalogue including Whatcha Say and Ridin’ Solo before he slowed it down with a rendition of Stupid Love from his most recent album, Tattoos.

During the show he talked about his rehearsal injury, even apologising for not making his tour a couple of years ago. He went into It Girl and Breathing where the fans sang along with every word.

A highlight of the evening was when Derulo covered Lorde’s Royals which he substituted some lyrics.

And it was his most recent hit, Talk Dirty, which really got everyone on their feet and of course, he ripped his shirt off to end like he does every show.
